If you’re always on the lookout for versatile DIY hacks that provide multiple benefits with ease, then you’ll be intrigued by the potential of this powerhouse ingredient. Any guesses? Well, it is none other than nutmeg, also known as jaiphal.

Recently, nutritionist Leema Mahajan shared the remarkable versatility of nutmeg, explaining that “just a pinch of jaiphal or nutmeg is enough to give you relief from skin issues, insomnia, indigestion, and low libido.”

She highlighted nutmeg’s benefits for the skin, saying, “Nutmeg is believed to be one of the best herbs for the skin. Owing to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, it keeps the skin healthy, soft, and supple. It also has the ability to treat acne, unclog pores, and remove blackheads.”

Agreeing, Dr Shabana Parveen, clinical nutritionist, Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon told us that nutmeg has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that may help soothe skin problems like acne, redness or irritation. It could potentially help regulate hormones, promote gut health because of its carminative properties, and improve sleep due to compounds like myristicin, which have sedative effects.

Adding, Pratiksha Kadam, consultant dietitian, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai said that nutmeg is a good source of essential nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, along with minerals such as manganese, magnesium, copper, phosphorus, zinc, and iron. It’s also rich in fibre, promoting digestive health and stabilising blood sugar levels.

However, Dr Parveen noted that there’s not enough scientific evidence supporting these claims, as there is not enough research done on humans to confirm these effects.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp yogurt
  • 1/2 tsp raw honey

Method:

  1. Mix 1/2 tsp nutmeg with 1 tbsp yogurt and 1/2 tsp raw honey.
  2. Apply the mixture over your face and let it dry for 15 minutes.
  3. Scrub it gently and then wash it off with lukewarm water.

In addition to skincare, Mahajan suggested adding a pinch of nutmeg powder to your glass of milk for better sleep or making nutmeg tea for its various potential benefits.
