“It contains so many antioxidants, fats, and other ingredients that speed up the healing process,” Halsey explained.

American singer Halsey, who gave birth to son Ender Ridley Aydin in July 2021, recently opened up about how their skincare routine has changed since the birth of their son with partner Alev Aydin. “I’ve always been really conscious about what goes on my skin, but when your baby is kissing you or snuggled up against you, you become hyper-cognizant of what’s on your face,” Halsey told Nylon.

The singer also mentioned that they discovered the best skincare ingredient after having a baby. It’s breast milk! “I started breastfeeding, and I figured out that breast milk is the best skincare ingredient ever because it’s so full of antioxidants and good fats and stuff that speed up the healing process,” Halsey said.

But, is breast milk really an effective skincare ingredient? Turns out, it’s true. Dr Sushruta Mokadam, Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Kharadi, Pune, said, “Breast milk is being marketed as the next face cream, botox, exfoliant, anti-ageing, acne-curing, miracle beauty therapy! If you are a new mom or a soon-to-be new mom with ample breast milk production, your baby may be well fed and you may be wondering what to do with this leftover breast milk. Expired breast milk may appear to be a waste, but there are things you can do with it so that it is not squandered.”

The expert said you can utilise your breast milk to stay fresh-faced and feel rejuvenated through the first few months or even years of nursing your infant. “Many skin and soft tissue conditions, including diaper rash, eczema, acne, and umbilical cord separation, as well as sore, dry, or cracked nipples, pink eye, nasal congestion, and minor scrapes, burns, and other superficial skin wounds, benefit from breast milk’s powerful immunological properties,” Dr Mokadam added.

Though the topical benefits of breast milk are enormous, she suggested consulting your healthcare provider in case you or your baby have an infection or major wound. “Sometimes (stronger) antibiotics or other professional care is required to ensure full and complete recovery.”

Here are some dos and don’ts you must keep in mind, according to Dr Mokadam.

*Breast milk, which has been refrigerated and thawed and kept unused for 2 hours, should not be re-refrigerated or re-frozen. There is a high likelihood of bacterial contamination which may lead to the diminishing of its beneficial properties.

*Ideally, one must use only one’s own breast milk to ensure asepsis and sterility.

*Do not use expressed breast milk immediately within 2 hours of consuming alcohol or using nicotine products like cigarettes, as these are secreted in the milk and alter the quality.
